Synopsis of Sweet Penny and the Lion by Richard Fairgray & Alexander Burke

Sweet Penny is so good, she would never do anything to disappoint her parents or disrupt class or upset her friends. In fact, she’s so sweet that even when bullies steal her lunch, she just quietly smiles and lets them.

And then, one day on the playground Penny’s class is playing a game when a lion hops over the fence. Penny’s classmates scream and scatter, but Penny was told to stay right where she is. And so she does.

And the lion eats her.

But something changes when she’s in his very dark belly. She punches and kicks her way out, and when she emerges, not-so-sweet Penny will never be taken advantage of again.

I like the idea of my daughter doing exactly as she is told. But how do I explain to her that sometimes you shouldn’t do as you are told. This particular book tells the story of Penny, a little girl who always did as she was told. But in one particular instance she is put in danger right in front of a lion. While her classmates run for safety she stays exactly where she is. Why? Because her teacher told her not to move. This proves catastrophic, as the lion eats her! Sure this sounds like quite the harsh lesson, but it’s a kid book and she’s just in the lion’s tummy. While inside something changes in Penny. She realizes that she probably shouldn't have stayed where she was. She kicks and punches her way out. From this point forward she learns that no one will take advantage of her sweetness. She knows that sometimes you need to go with your gut, no matter how young.

Sometimes that may mean breaking some rules, rules that could put you in danger. I want my daughter to know this, and this book helps explain it in a way she may understand. Don't end up in "trouble" because you didn't move or speak up.
